Honey bees may be small, but their bodies are beautifully designed for flight, communication, pollination, and life inside a busy colony. Like all insects, a honey bee has three main body sections: the head, thorax, and abdomen. Each section contains specialized structures that help the bee find flowers, collect food, care for the hive, and survive in a complex social world.
Head
The head contains the honey bee’s eyes, antennae, brain, and mouthparts. Honey bees have two large compound eyes that help them detect movement, shapes, colors, and ultraviolet patterns on flowers. They also have three small simple eyes, called ocelli, that help sense light intensity. Their antennae are extremely important sensory organs used for smell, taste, touch, communication, and recognizing hive odors.
Mouthparts
Honey bees have specialized mouthparts for both chewing and drinking. Their mandibles help them shape wax, clean the hive, handle pollen, and care for young bees. Their long tongue-like proboscis allows them to sip nectar from flowers and pass liquid food to other bees inside the colony.
Thorax
The thorax is the center of movement. It holds the bee’s six legs and four wings and contains powerful flight muscles. These muscles allow honey bees to fly from flower to flower, fan the hive for ventilation, and help regulate temperature inside the colony.
Wings
Honey bees have two pairs of wings. During flight, tiny hooks called hamuli connect the front and back wings on each side so they work together as one larger wing surface. This gives the bee better control and efficiency while flying.
Legs
Honey bee legs are used for walking, grooming, gripping, and collecting pollen. Worker bees have special pollen baskets, called corbiculae, on their hind legs. These smooth, curved areas hold packed pollen as the bee flies back to the hive.
Abdomen
The abdomen contains many of the bee’s internal organs, including parts of the digestive, respiratory, circulatory, and reproductive systems. In worker bees, the abdomen also contains wax glands, scent glands, and the sting apparatus.
Wax Glands
Worker bees produce beeswax from glands on the underside of the abdomen. The wax comes out as tiny flakes, which bees chew and shape into honeycomb. This comb becomes the structure where the colony raises young and stores honey and pollen.
Stinger
Female honey bees, including workers and queens, have a stinger. Worker bees use their stinger to defend the colony from threats. The worker honey bee’s stinger is barbed, which means it can remain lodged in the skin of mammals after stinging.
Internal Systems
Honey bees breathe through tiny openings called spiracles along the sides of their bodies. Air moves through a network of tubes called tracheae instead of lungs. They also have a honey stomach, or crop, used to carry nectar back to the hive before it is turned into honey.
